Thought for the Day - Why You Should Donate Your Hair

Today was a sick day for me, so no new hairsyle today.  In the mean time, think about this:

Do you think you can't possibly part with your hair? Short hair doesn't look good on you? Perhaps your significant other "doesn't like" short hair.

Think about this. How would you feel if you didn't have the choice? Consider a woman fighting cancer who has to deal with losing it all, I'm sure she would love to have that cute short hairstyle that you'll have when you're done donating.

And to your significant other, ask them how they think that woman feels going home to her family with no hair. Ask them to give it a chance for her.

Day 77 - Curly Sue

OK - I am officially running out of ideas... help!

Day 76 - Hairy Hadband

Sorry this is late... You know how holiday weekends go!

Day 75 - Black Friday

OK, so it's Black Friday.  That means shopping, which calls for a simple, out-of-my face hairdo...

I started by pulling both braids together in the back, but I really didn't like the look of it.  It got a whole lot cuter when I pulled it over to the side.

Here's the inspiration http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/05/possibly-the-cutest-braided-su.html

Day 74 - Tyra, Tyra, Tyra

I was watching ANTM the other day and saw this cute look on the finalists.

It made me think, I wonder if Tyra would be interested in the idea of having a hair marathon to support Pantene's Beautiful Lengths?  If you watch her show, she's always chaging her hair.  Look at her site http://tyrashow.warnerbros.com/ and you can see that in a week's worth of shows, there are no hair repeats...  hmm... I'm persistant, maybe she would be interested.  Think about it.  There could be a show with say 6 donators (that's how many it takes to make a wig) who cut their hair that day.  Maybe she could even invite a woman who's fighting cancer & surprise her with a wig from ACS on the show...  I would watch.

Anyway, here's how my style turned out.  And of course, I smized...

What's the point?

It's Thanksgiving, and I'm thankful for my health... and my hair.

So what is the point of doing 100 hairstyles in 100 days? Well, besides being a fun challenge for me, it's also an opportunity to promote a good cause. Every year, many women lose their hair due to their battle with cancer. I can imagine how dis-heartening this could be. I love my hair. It's one of the major ways I express my personal style. To be fighting for my life & then to lose my hair on top of it would be extremly emotional for me.

So here's what I'm doing about it. I am treating my hairstyle challenge as a marathon of sorts. And just like the marathons that people run, I'm asking for your support. Mainly, I'm hoping to get 1000 people to pledge to donate their hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths on Februray 20, 2010. For more details see the post on "to donate your hair". To pledge your hair you can RSVP on Facebook, Evite or comment on this post.

If you can't donate you hair, you can still help. First off, you can send the link (100hairstyles.blogspot.com) to this blog to your friends & ask them to pass it on as well. I don't know that many people tha have hair long enough to donate, and I'm sure you don't either. But the more people who pass it on, the better chance of finding those people with the hair to donate.

You can tell others. By becoming a fan of 100 Hairstyles on Facebook, you incrase the visibility of the cause. Pantene Beautiful Lengths also has a fan page, so think about becoming a fan there as well. Please recommend the fan page to your facebook friends, again to reach higher visibility.

Lastly, the power of the dollar. Pantene Beautiful Lengths has paired with the American Cancer Society to provide to real hair wigs. I've set up a donation page for the blog, any donation amount would help.

Thanks for any type of support. Any ideas of ways to make the blog better, help the cause or anything else are welcome.

Thanks! Katrina

To Donate Your Hair

You've decide to donate your hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths? Great! Now what do you do?

1) Make sure it meets the requirements.  If not, please see the other ways you can help the marathon.

2) RSVP via Facebook, Evite or by commenting on the blog. When you RSVP, let me know your location. If you're in the South Jersey, Deleware, Pennsylvania tri-state area, we can donate together at In The Village (http://www.inthevillage.com/)  I'll keep you posted on how to make an appointment. If you're not in the area, make an appointment at your normal salon for February 20, 2010

3) Take care of your hair. Keep it conditioned, keep it trimmed, and don't bleach or dye it. For more information see Pantene's site.

4) On February 20, get your hair cut. Take a before picture, take a picture of geting the cut & take a picture of your cut new style & the ponytail. It'd be great to see these on the event page.

5) Send the ponytail to:
100 Hairstyles c/o
Pantene Beautiful Lengths
511 Wisconsin Drive
New Richmond, WI 54017-2613

6) Give yourself a pat on the back. You've done a great thing!

Day 73 - Nanny Again

He says it looks like the evil nanny once again...  It was supposed to be a cute poufy ponytail, but the pouf is a little tricky... I used Pantene's Root Lifter Spray to help the cause, but I dryed my hair the night before, so I think I slept out some of the volume.

Here's the inspiration...http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/11/the-poufy-pony-oodles-of-cuten.html

Day 72 - Amish Twist

Today's style was inspired (yet again) by the Glamour Beauty Blog. It
was a hairstyle Fergie did...  Did I pull it off?

http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/11/fergies-hairstylist-shows-me-h.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+glamour%2Fthegirlsinthebeautydepartment+%28Glamour%3A+The+Girls+in+the+Beauty+Department%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

1000 Ponytails

OK - I'm making it official.  I want to try to get 1000 ponytails donated through this blog.  I'm working on a way for people to send them in & get counted as from this marathon (like a specific address).

Now I just have to get pledge 1... (or 2 if you count me :)

Day 71 - Shhh... I'm hunting Wabbits

Today's style may look complicated, but it was really born from not
having enough time to do much else. Really simple. Make two braids
on the side of your head (mine were done about ear level, but you can
choose it based on your hair length.) Then bring both up to the top &
pin them together, hiding the ends. Easy!
P.S. if you're wondering about the name, my husband is too interested
in hunting lately to name the styles...

Day 70 - Frenchie

Like the little twist in the front? It keeps my bangs out of my face...

Day 69 - Start it Over

So here's day 1 of the two day battle with my hair. I first started
into a try at the Fergie Inspired hair shown on Glamour's Website
http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/11/fergies-hairstylist-shows-me-h.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+glamour%2Fthegirlsinthebeautydepartment+%28Glamour%3A+The+Girls+in+the+Beauty+Department%29&utm_content=Google+Feedfetcher

But I put too much wax in my hair & it got greasy... so I had to wash
my hair & start again. And of course, I was already late. So
straight & simple was the way to go. I did have a new headband to
Jazz it up, which saved the style from eternal boredom...

Lack of computer

> So, I have the picture for day 69, but no real access to a
> computer. So I'll tell a story about today's & yesterdays
> hairstyle. Both day I started with differnt intentions that ended

Pantene

Got a goody bag of Pantene products today, hooray! Can't wait to try out some of the products, especially the spray wax!

Don't Forget - Pantene is making the Beautiful Lengths Program possible.  Women with cancer are able to get real hair wigs via this program.  Can you donate your hair? (or money?)  Support the Marathon

Day 68 - Everybody's Heard about the Bird

OK - I've never even heard the song, but my co-workers came up with the name. I love my new hair accessory, although I think it's better off lower & back farther - possibly in with a bun. I'll try that one day. I parted my bangs in the center for something different, I think I shoudl have blow-dried them forward more... kind of like here http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/11/do-or-dont-center-parted-bangs.html

For now, I'll just move it back & down in this style....

Day 67 - Surprise Braid

Another Glamour inspired do... http://www.glamour.com/beauty/blogs/girls-in-the-beauty-department/2009/11/hair-obession-of-the-day-nikki.html

I love the "Surprise Braid" as my friend called it...

Here's the inspiration (From Glamours Website)

Day 66 - Simple Kind of Life

I can't remember where I saw it (maybe Glamour's blog or magazine) but
I recently saw a really simple pulled back pony (she had black hair).
That's where I got my inspiration.

Day 65 - Half Up Glam

No - that's not the name my husband gave it, I think he's given up on naming them every day. It's the name given to it by Celebrity Stylist for Pantene, Hallie Bowman (see the bottom)

.
The Look: Half-Up Glam
Why Hallie Loves It: It's a modern twist on the classic half-up style
with just enough edge
How to Get the Style:
1. Start by using the Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality Shampoo and
Conditioner to tame frizz and fly-aways.
2. Distribute the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smoothing Crème evenly
throughout wet hair to keep locks looking smooth and frizz-free all
day.
3. Blow dry hair using a natural or combination bristle brush.
4. Begin the style by creating a deep side part (think 80s!).
5. Collect top half of hair starting above the ears, leaving bottom
half loose (think half-up)
6. Collect sections of hair on sides of head, leaving a 2-inch section
of hair out on top of the head for use later, then slick sides of hair
back and collect with a bungee or clear elastic band at crown of head.
7. Spray top section of hair with Pantene Pro-V Texture Spray Wax to
add to make hair more malleable.
8. Pull top section of hair back, leaving volume at the top, and
secure at crown of head with pins; this will conceal elastic band for
a clean finish.
9. To lock in style, finish with a spritz of Pantene Pro-V Classic
Flexible Hold Aerosol Hairspray.
I haven't had a chance to try out the products she mentions, but I
really think I want to try out that spray wax....
What do you think? Do you think this is what she meant? I didn't
have any pics, but I think I got it.

Day 64 - Ramp it Up

Today was my first day with a bump it. Actually it's called a "Hair Bumps" but same thing really. I like the volume, but it's a little bit of a "sharp edge" not exatcly how I imagined it. I guess I have to get better at teasing the hair aroud the bump. What cracks me up is the package... it says "makes you look taller, makes you look thinner" Come on, it makes you look like you have big hair!

Day 63 - Slap a Headband in it

So I spent a good deal of this weekend (probably 10 - 12 hours)
updating the website, creating facebook pages, etc and honestly, I
plain ran out of time to do my hair. Luckily I had this one up my
sleeve, the perfect solution to glam up a boring hairstyle - a
headband.

Day 62 - Electricuted

My husband walked into the room when I was done getting ready for a party and asked "Are you kidding, is that really your hair?" Needless to say, he wasn't a huge fan, but I thought it was cute. I got multiple compliments on it as well, so I think he's just not up with the styles!

Pledge to Support the Marathon

As you've noticed, there's some changes going on.   I've contacted Pantene Beautiful Lengths program to find ways to support the charity.  Here's some ways you can help (I'll be adding more details in the next few weeks):

Pledge to donate your hair on Feburary 20, 2010.

Pledge $ in support of the cause
  • American Cancer Society is working with Pantene Beautiful Lengths to distribute the wigs.  If you can't donate your hair, you can donate to the ACS
Tell Others!

Day 61 - I wanna be like Nicole (Or the B52 Love Shack)

Yesterday, my friend at work had the cutest hairstyle. All her curls were piled on top of her head in a cute little pouf. I loved it, so I tried something similar.

I don't have the curls, so I made a poufy bun. What do you think?

Or perhaps it's more like the B52s (per Pete)
